FAQ: Navigating the Sensory Lab

What exactly is ASMR?

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a “tingling” sensation that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the spine. It is often triggered by soft whispers, personal attention, or light touch. In the Lab, we use manual triggers to induce this state, which has been shown to lower heart rate and promote a deep state of relaxation.

While The Kay Spot is founded and managed by a Nurse Practitioner, a sensory session is not a medical examination, diagnosis, or treatment for a medical condition. Think of it as Neurological Hygiene. We use science-backed protocols to help your autonomic nervous system shift from “fight or flight” to a Systemic Exhale.

We hear this every day! There are two types of tickling: gargalesis (the heavy, reactive kind that causes laughter) and knismesis (the light, feather-like sensation that triggers tingles). Our Lab specializes in knismesis. We begin with Grounding Pressure to help regulate your nervous system. By the time we transition to light-touch techniques, your body already feels safe. If you do laugh, it’s simply a release of tension. We will adjust the experience until you feel comfortable and relaxed.

Comfort is the only dress code in the Lab. Because our work focuses on the scalp, neck, upper back, and arms, we recommend:

  • Low collars: Avoid turtlenecks or high-neck hoodies.
  • Loose sleeves: To allow access to the arms.
  • Simple hair: If you are coming for “brain tingles,” avoid complex styles or heavy hair products so our tools can reach the scalp easily.

As an NP-led facility, we maintain strict sanitation standards.

  • UV-C sterilization: All sensory instruments (such as feathers and brushes) undergo a medical-grade UV-C light cycle between each guest.
  • Single-use infusions: Our Thermostatic Lipid Infusion (TLI) sleeves are fully self-contained and disposed of after one use.
  • Medical-Grade Cleaning: All surfaces are disinfected with clinical-grade solutions after every session.

To support a full Neurological Reset, we maintain a whisper-only environment. Once the session begins, we encourage silence so your mind can fully focus on the sensory experience. If you need to communicate, a soft whisper is perfectly fine.

Every nervous system is different. While many guests experience ASMR sensations, a successful session is defined by a Systemic Exhalewhen your breathing slows and mental activity quiets. Even without tingles, your body still benefits from reduced stress and nervous system regulation.
